How should I have reacted in this situation?

I probably would have just said, "Okay, sorry," to avoid any confrontation. Telling people not to do something always escalates (him telling you not to put your stuff on someone else's car, you telling him not to swear). He was probably already mad at something though, so your best bet would have been to just walk away.
